City descritpion
The capital of the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein is well-known for the Kiel Week and the Kiel Canal which flows into the Kiel Fjord in the quarter of Holtenau. During the summer, the surrounding beaches are a popular place for recreation.
Kiel Week
The famous sailing regatta takes place each year during the last full week of June. In addition to exciting competitions, numerous events and folk festivals are held all over the city.
Kiel Canal
The Kiel Canal was opened in 1895 to spare navigators the dangerous route around the Skagerrak. The canal is 100 kilometers long and connects the Baltic with the North Sea between Kiel and Brunsbüttel, flowing through the varying landscapes of the northernmost German state.
Hörn Bridge
The Hörn is the southern end of the Kiel Fjord near the central station. From a bascule bridge you get a fantastic view of the skyline and the port.
